Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden)'s activities focused initially on expanding its gold business which now includes five mines and over 11 million ounces. Maaden has also developed its activities beyond gold with the development of Maaden Phosphate Company, which started production in 2011, and its aluminium project, which began commercial operations in September 2014. The aluminium project is a joint venture with Alcoa. It is a USD 10.8 billion project that consists of a bauxite mine, a refinery, and a smelter.
