HM Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik Al Said was born in Muscat on 1955-10-11. He is a cousin of Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, who was Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020. Sultan Haitham served for multiple decades in Sultan Qaboos’s cabinet including as Minister of Heritage and Culture from 2002 to 2020. Sultan Qaboos named him as his successor in his will. Sultan Haitham was proclaimed sultan on 11 January 2020, hours after Sultan Qaboos’s death.
